Big Goals, Big Dreams

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a “baby nurse”. All I knew is, there were people, babies, in the world that needed love and care and I wanted that job to be mine. I had no idea how to work towards that. I didn’t come from a family that highlighted college or could even financially fund. I wasn’t dedicated on schoolwork, it didn’t come easy, so I didn’t apply myself. So, how am I to become a “baby nurse” without college, without training.

Enter first job in the hospital - hot line in the kitchen. I had never truly baked or cooked anything. The best I did, was worked at a sandwich shop, that had a grill. I had to learn every single thing. Even mac-n-cheese! Hot water (check), macaroni added (check), add cheese (check). “You put the cheese in too soon, now it’s ruined.” My trainer informed me, I didn’t follow the process. Get done as fast as possible, without instructions. Ya, I learned quickly that would not get me anywhere. I’ve since learned, all things need discovery (learning), defining (understanding), plan (practice), implement (get to it)

A year after working in the hot kitchen, I got a promotion, to work in cold foods! I was able to excel, feel good about the work I was doing. Also, I didn’t have to be in at 4a.
